VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Construction:

  • Time Commitment:  Varies depending on role (Crew leader = 1-3 days, House leader = a few weekends up to 12-14 weeks). The house leader's availability determines the schedule for most Habitat builds.
  • Opportunities are as follows:
    • General volunteer (skilled or unskilled) - Construction volunteers participate in building or renovation at all stages.  No experience is necessary, and on-site training is provided.  Skilled volunteers can improve construction/renovation productivity by lending their expertise in site preparation, siding, heating and cooling, plumbing, drywall hanging and finishing, electrical, framing, carpentry, roofing, floor covering, concrete/flatwork, and excavation.
    • Crew Leader - Crew Leaders bring their skilled expertise to the build site and supervise a small team of volunteers on a specified task.  Having Crew Leaders on our build sites helps the process tremendously, as they share the supervising responsibility with the House Leaders.  We look for Crew Leaders in all areas of the building process.
    • House Leader - House Leaders are responsible for leading the construction of one or more houses.  House Leaders should have knowledge of all aspects of residential construction/renovation and excellent communication skills, must be willing to teach building skills, have the ability to read plans and complete material take-offs, lead groups, and be able to work well with people of different skill levels. Commitment is usually the duration of a build project, which varies in length but can typically run about twelve to fifteen weeks (House Leaders will work with the Construction Manager to set a build schedule that fits with their needs).
  • To register as a general construction volunteer, see VOLUNTEER REGISTRATION, above.
  • If you are interested in taking a larger leadership role on one of our construction projects, please, contact Bill Dunphy at bdunphy@h4h.org.

Committees:

  • Time Commitment:  Some committees meet once a month, others meet twice, but not all. In addition to occasional meetings, there are also responsibilities and tasks, which vary by committee.
  • Committees available:
    • Construction:  The committee strives to build and renovate houses that are simple, yet of the highest quality and energy standards. The committee is composed of volunteer house leaders and individuals who may or may not work in the construction industry.  If interested, please, contact Bill Dunphy at bdunphy@h4h.org.
    • Family Support:  The committee is made up of members who are assigned to and assist our partner families from the time they are accepted into our program and throughout the entire construction process. This is very important in ensuring that each family is successful in their new home.  The assigned committee member then stays in touch with the family for at least one year following closing. During this period after closing, our Family Support Coordinator and the Homeowner's Association members reach out and connect with the family more directly. Committee meetings are held the second Wednesday afternoon of each month. If you are interested in working with Family Support, please, contact Gwynn Sterken at gwynn.sterken@gmail.com.
    • Development:   This committee is responsible for raising money to fund the construction or renovation of our families' homes. We partner with other agencies, businesses, organizations, faith-based groups and many individuals to accomplish our goal.  If interested, please, contact Theresa Finney-Dumais at theresafd@h4h.org.
    • Family Selection: This committee works with families that want to purchase a Habitat home and apply for Habitat's zero-interest mortgage.  Committee members reach out into the community, as well as review and recommend qualified applicants to the Board of Directors.  We ask that interested individuals please make a minimum one year commitment to the committee.  Meetings are typically held the third Wednesday of the month.  If you are interested or would like more information, please, contact Joe Slowins at jslowins@comcast.net.
    • Site Selection/Development:  This committee is responsible for finding and acquiring building sites and pre-owned homes that can be renovated, as well as moving multi-development projects through the planning process.  Most members have some familiarity with land acquisition, architecture, real estate practices, construction planning, or development.  This committee is NOT CURRENTLY ACTIVE; however, we are always interested in working with individuals who have these skills.  If you are interested, please, contact Sarah Teare at steare@h4h.org.

Front Desk Support:

  • Answers our main phone line, directs calls to staff, greets visitors, assists Office Manager and other staff with office tasks. Computer skills are helpful, but not required. If interested, please, contact our Office Manager, Stephanie Schmoldt, at stephs@h4h.org or call 734-677-1558, ext. 101.
  • Time Commitment = your availability. We would appreciate 2 - 8 hrs/week.

ReStore

  • Volunteer support for ReStore (http://www.h4h.org/restore.html) operations is essential.  We welcome volunteers who want to volunteer in the store or volunteers who want to work behind the scenes to help with volunteer recruitment, marketing, advertising needs, and overall strategic development of the business.
  • If interested, please, contact Jackie Hermann at jhermann@h4h.org.
